Bistro Max’s “Field of Dreams”

As part of the one-year Food Service Operation course at Durham College, students will open Bistro Max to the public for a 10-week period during February, March and April where they will be responsible for preparing and serving three-course meals from a biweekly, rotating menu for just $15 per person.

Durham College’s Culinary Skills program was introduced in September 2010 to provide students with basic theoretical and practical culinary skills with an emphasis on locally grown and produced foods.

While students currently use Maxwell Heights S.S. for their practical lab work, they will eventually study in the new 30,000-square-foot building currently being built for students studying in hospitality, tourism and food programs as part of the college’s Whitby, Ontario campus expansion. The building will be able to accommodate an additional 950 students and house a full-service, green-certified restaurant that is open to the general public and a greenhouse so both students and community members can watch the foods of Durham Region come to life.

Members of the public who are interested in making a reservation at Bistro Max or who would like more information can call 905.721.2000 ext. 2488 or e-mail bistro.max@durhamcollege.ca.

As a side note, your roving Fridge Whisperer reporter will be checking out the flavours of Bistro Max this Thursday and will post her, no doubt, delicious findings here on Friday’s “Deb’s Daily Dish.”

Foodie @ large: Greektown WAY east of the Danforth…

I’ve been doing drive-bys past the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in south Oshawa, Ontario for several weeks now. No, I’m not converting. It’s because they have a big sign out front advertising homemade Greek food for sale every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I adore Greek food but, sadly, in my neck of the woods its, well, sadly lacking, in anything that resembles good taste. (See my “Eater Beware” rant). After umpteen miserable attempts to source a good Greek food joint in Durham Region I’d resided myself to trekking into Toronto’s east end Greektown on the Danforth to get my fix.

You can imagine my utter delight as the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary kitchen brigade — headed by Thomas Chryssovergis and flanked by servers Koula and Bessie (click on the photo to see Bessie complete) — uncovered the chafers and let me peek ‘n sniff at what they’d created from scratch just hours before I’d arrived. Real Greek food! All handmade with loads of love. And quality ingredients (this nose knows) like pork tenderloin for the kebabs and real lemons and hand rolled pastries and layers of thickly sliced Yukon Golds between the meatily layered mousaka.

All offerings can be purchased al a carte or you can opt for the mixed plate which, of course, I did.

It was love at first bite.

Succulent pork souvlaki sided by a dollop of garlicy tzatziki sauce; a Greek salad they dressed after I’d placed my order. A hardy salad laced with creamy sheep’s milk feta and earthy kalamatas; two huge juicy all-beef meatball covered in a rich tomato sauce spiked with subtle hits of oregano; lemon-herb rice; a spinach spanakopita roll; and the best darn mousaka I’ve ever tasted in my life (including mine!). What did all this amazing food cost? Try $7.50 including tax and all the free smiles you want.

Foodie @ Large: Breakfast for dinner

I don’t know what it is about Friday nights but — these days — I find myself longing for comfort food.

Last week I stumbled upon the Simcoe Street Grill in downtown Oshawa, Ontario. A nice, friendly mom ‘n pop open kitchen set up with the owner’s kid busing tables and sweeping floors (he looked about 12). From all accounts this is a new upstart in the downtown core and judging by the number of patrons hold up at tables and others waiting for their take-out order to cross the pass, I’m guessing the Simcoe Street Grill is here to stay.

Excellent wait staff, an extremely recession-friendly menu, and a hardy all-day breakfast had me coming back for seconds tonight. Two eggs over easy, a mound of perfectly crisp but not to salty bacon, buttered whole wheat toast and homefries set me back $4 bucks.

Need I say more?
